Exhibition 2026: „Diverse Lebensgemeinschaften“
I had received an invitation to an art exhibition at the Stadtpfarrerkirche in Müncheberg. Built in the early 13th century by monks of the Cistercian Order, the church has a long history of renovations and destruction. During World War II, it was so severely damaged that it could be rebuilt only until after German reunification. A new utilization concept was developed that incorporates both religious and secular uses.
The exhibition presents 17 oil paintings from different phases of the artist’s career. On the one hand, these include works from the series of family portraits; on the other, paintings in which athletes appear as protagonists in new compositions that often bring about a complete semantical transformation. The works explore a wide range of situations involving human and animal interaction, spanning the spectrum between pure cooperation and competition. Some of the compositions could depict real scenes, while most are assembled from highly diverse elements and possess a surreal quality.
From this emerge a wide variety of forms of cohabitation, whether lasting or only temporary. Happy soccer players on a patch of green turf beneath a vast blue sky are surrounded by protective water spirits in their element. A youth equipped with sword and helmet, clad only in underpants, confronts a monkey dressed in an exaggeratedly feminine costume.
Appropriately for the venue, two paintings from the soccer series are being shown; their composition draws inspiration from traditional altarpieces, which often consist of a central panel, wings, and a predella.
The musical accompaniment will be provided by the solo cellist Regine Daniels-Stoll, whom I had the pleasure of getting to know and appreciate during our stay at Wiepersdorf Castle.
